Fireboy & Watergirl: Forest Temple is the first of the Fireboy and Watergirl puzzle-platformers, and it is built around one idea: two characters who cannot do each other's jobs. Fireboy walks through lava and burns in water. Watergirl does the opposite. Both die in the green goo. Every chamber is a small problem about getting both of them to their own exit door.

It is a calmer pick than most of what sits next to Rocket League 2D. There is no clock pressure beyond a time rating at the end, and no opponent. If you have been playing fast car-soccer rounds and want something slower where thinking beats reflexes, this is that. It runs in the browser with nothing to install.

How to play

The game is designed for two people on one keyboard. Fireboy uses the arrow keys: left and right to walk, up to jump. Watergirl uses W, A and D: A and D to walk, W to jump. The start screen shows the keys, and you need to click inside the game once so it receives them.

Each chamber has red diamonds that only Fireboy can collect and blue diamonds that only Watergirl can collect. Lifts, levers, pressure plates and pushable blocks control the way forward, and often one character has to stand on a plate or hold a lever so the other can pass. The chamber is finished when both characters stand in front of their doors. Collecting every diamond and finishing quickly improves your rating, but you can clear a level without either.

Tips

1. Look at the whole chamber before moving. Work out which hazard pool each character can cross and which switch opens which gate.
2. Do not rush a jump over a pool of the wrong colour. Fireboy and Watergirl each have a pool they can cross, so plan routes with that in mind.
3. If you play alone, switch between the two characters one at a time. Move one onto a plate, then run the other through the open gate.
4. If a block gets stuck or someone dies, restart the chamber. Chambers are short, so a restart costs little.

Most of the site is competitive. Foosball is another game made for two people at one keyboard, but there you play against each other rather than working together. Flick Goal is a one-button aiming game and Retro Bowl is a football management game with short matches. Forest Temple is the one here where the two players are on the same side.

It suits shared sessions, such as a friend or sibling next to you, and it also works solo if you enjoy puzzles. A keyboard is strongly recommended, because the two-key layouts are awkward on a touchscreen.
